DIXIE HAS A FILTHY SENSE OF HUMOR AND A HEART OF GOLD

I knew going in that “Dixie’s Tupperware Party” would be a bawdy, innuendo-filled spectacle; what I didn’t know is how much heart the show would have.
When Dixie Longate got quiet at one point in her one-“woman” show and started in on a serious/inspirational monologue, it was jarring. Dixie — whom actor Kris Andersson portrays with a terrific mix of broad humor and detailed observation — was switching from sex jokes to an empowerment message, and the whole tone of the thing seemed wrong.
But after a couple of minutes, I started to really dig the contrast. It allowed Dixie to go from caricature to real person, and the gutter quality of the humor made the whole thing seem a lot less corn-pone than it might have otherwise.
All in all, it was probably the best evening of entertainment I’ve had in Yakima so far in 2010.
The show, which opened Tuesday and runs through Sunday, is selling out fast. As of this afternoon, there are still tickets for all four weekend shows: 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. It’s at The Seasons Performance Hall, but is produced by the Capitol Theatre. For tickets, call the Capitol at 509-853-2787 or visit www.capitoltheatre.org.
