OK, I meant to get to this sooner in the day; here are my notes from Thursday’s performance of “Avenue Q” at the Capitol Theatre.
• It’s not good to sing songs from this show at work, no matter how catchy they are. I’ve had the ultra-catchy “The Internet is For Porn” in my head all week. Every time I start singing it to myself, I have to stop. Singing to yourself is weird enough when you’re not singing about that kind of thing.
• The edginess of the whole thing was no big deal. I didn’t see anyone walk out in disgust. The show got a standing ovation.
• Puppet sex is creepy, but it is funny. I guess I didn’t expect it to be sexy or anything, but I was surprised at just how creepy it was when it was acted out on stage. I would have been uncomfortable, except I was too busy laughing.
• The Gary Coleman character is not a puppet; he’s live-action. That was a shocking realization, seeing as how I’d referred to the “puppet version” of Coleman in my preview story on the show. I came into the office after the show last night to write a correction (On Magazine was already printed). So that’s how today’s paper ended up with a correction for a mistake in today’s paper.
