Quality of Life…
It’s not so much what we’re given, but what we do with it, for ourselves and for others.
The Capitol Theatre Committee (CTC) strives to provide art and entertainment opportunities that improve the quality of life for everyone—Theatre patrons, other area businesses and organizations, the children who live a few blocks down the road. Dedicated to service, the CTC is committed to ensuring that The Capitol Theatre remains more than just a performance venue for Yakima. The Theatre is—and always will be—a part of the heritage and fabric of our Valley, with a mission dedicated to improving the quality of life for all who live here.
Each year, CTC is involved in about 150 outreach projects and community partnerships, each helping to improve the quality of life in the Yakima Valley.
Capitol Community Partners
This past year, The Capitol Theatre, The Seasons Performance Hall, the Committee for Downtown Yakima and the Yakima Bears teamed-up to bring four major performers to the Sweet Summer Ender. This street festival-style event featured Australia’s Strange Fruit performing their one-of-a-kind physical theatre a top swaying 14 foot poles, and the sounds of the outstanding music groups The Senate, Bill Frisell and Carrie Rodriguez.
Capitol Arts Education
As more and more schools have been forced to cut back on arts education, The Capitol Theatre has begun offering an educational arts series: Capitol Kids. Launched in 2006, Capitol Kids brings in top rate shows designed for children, and provides tickets to performances for just five dollars. Community response has been tremendous, with nearly 18,000 students enjoying Capitol Kids performances in the first two seasons. Since that first year, Capitol Kids has grown to include a classroom component (see below), and four performances have been added to the lineup for this season. During the 2008-2009 school year, an estimated 15,000 students will enjoy Capitol Kids performances.
Capitol Kids In The Classroom
After an exceptionally well-received first year of Capitol Kids, the CTC approved the addition of a new classroom education component of the program. Capitol Kids in the Classroom has transformed our arts program from an exciting Theatre fieldtrip, to a complete, engaging education program that fulfills several Washington State core arts curriculum requirements. Capitol Kids in the Classroom introduces children to the joy and wonder of live theatre, while planting the seeds for a life-long pursuit of learning, social interaction and quality of life, and is provided to classrooms at no charge.
Capitol Community Outreach and Technical Support
Capitol Theatre outreach to both for-profit and not-for-profit organizations takes many forms, including technical assistance, facility access, and complimentary tickets. This community support defines us. It is a “Standard of Giving” that has—and will continue to—improve the quality of life in the Yakima Valley for generations to come.
