It’s violins gone wild when the musical group Barrage comes to the 4th Street Theatre! With the allure of Riverdance and the power of Stomp, Barrage has entertained millions of people around the world.
Created in Canada a decade ago, Barrage is an evolving troupe of talented international young musicians performing an eclectic, multi-cultural mix of music, song and dance. It’s a high-octane fiddle fest... five violinists with rock star looks and athletic prowess completely obliterating the stereotype of the nerdy violinist. With extraordinary musicianship and performances, laced with traces of everything from country to metal, Barrage’s virtuoso performers offer a fusion of musical styles with incredible energy. Led by Dean Marshall, music director of the group for the past ten years, Barrage pushes the envelope of artistic expression through Marshall’s original scores, while thrilling audiences along the way.
Animado—meaning “lively” in Spanish—is the name for Barrage’s current tour. It pulls its influences from the music and dance styles of Old World Europe, combining Spanish, Celtic, Italian, Russian and Ukrainian styles into a diverse fusion of cultures, music and energetic dance.
World music flavors, layered vocal arrangements and pulsating beats and rhythms characterize Animado, as well as all Barrage performances, along with the energy and vitality for which the group is known. The violinists, looking more like pop music personalities than traditional “string” players, instantly transform into fiddlers when the music demands. Playing everything from jigs and reels to big band classics and rock, their fingers fly at a fast and furious pace while they simultaneously perform tightly choreographed dance. Add in some wild and interesting percussion, strong vocals, and a tremendously talented back-up band, and the result is a show that energizes audiences from start to finish.
