MOVIN' OUT
JANUARY 9&10, 2009

Dust off those 80s cassettes! Billy Joel tunes are heading this way!

Movin’ Out is the “rock ballet” masterpiece of renowned choreographer Twyla Tharp. The Vietnam era story draws upon characters that appear in Billy Joel songs: The king and queen of the prom - Eddie and Brenda - have grown apart, while long time sweethearts James and Judy are ready for marriage. Their friend Tony is looking for love, and finds it with Brenda. Soon war takes the men away from home, leaving their loved ones to wait and worry. James is killed in combat, while Tony and Eddie return home broken as Judy grieves.

Neither Eddie nor Tony can get their lives back together after Vietnam. Tony can't seem to find a way to reconnect with Brenda. Eddie descends into a self destructive world of despair and drug addiction. He imagines Judy as his guide as he tours through a nightmare of his past. Soon after, he encounters Judy jogging in the park, and her warmth and forgiveness lead him to set his life back on track. Brenda and Tony rediscover their love, enabling them to heal their wounds. All four rekindle their friendship and discover they have all found the way back home.

Earning numerous awards on Broadway, Movin’ Out challenges our definition of “musical”. The actors don’t speak, or even sing. The show is basically a modern ballet set to Billy Joel soundtracks. The story is told through athletic and creative dance, with music and vocals performed nearly non-stop by the orchestra and piano man, hovering on a platform above the stage. In spite of its refusal to conform to musical expectations, Movin Out is a hit!
