Why Capitol Kids?
Research shows that many children in our state are not getting exposure to essential arts education experiences necessary to develop well-rounded thinking and learning skills. Participation in the arts is also a huge self-esteem booster, students motivation, self-discipline, perseverance, cooperation, collaboration, and productivity.
What is Capitol Kids?
An arts education series facilitated through touring productions at the Theatre, Capitol Kids offers a full spectrum of arts education programs for school-aged children. Capitol Kids connects the Washington State core arts education curriculum requirements (grade level benchmarks in the areas of dance, theatre, music and visual arts) to other WASL requirements that students need to pass for graduation.
Washington State Arts Essential Academic Learning Requirements
(EALRs):
1. The student understands and applies arts knowledge and skills;
2. The student demonstrates thinking skills using artistic processes;
3. The student communicates through the arts;
4. The student makes connections with and across the arts, to other disciplines, life cultures and work.
New for 2007 – 2008
Capitol Kids in the Classroom moves our arts education experience beyond a once a year fieldtrip. This new focus allows us to use the arts as a tool to engage students - in the classroom.
